An Introduction to Differential Diagnosis for Therapists

Thursday, 11th December 2025 @ 7 p.m.

Presenter: Yvonne Blake

Biography: Yvonne first become a Director of the SMA in 2015, was elected Vice Chair in 2020, and stepped up to Chair the Board in 2022. Yvonne originally trained as a holistic massage therapist, qualified in Sports Massage in 1999 and then went on to complete a BSc and MSc in Sports Therapy. Yvonne works with athletes at all levels - right up to world famous competitors in Strong Man. Yvonne has taught Sports Massage for many years and is now putting her years of experience to good use by helping Awarding Organisations raise their standards. Yvonne runs a busy practice in Clitheroe, Lancashire, from her local gym - specialising in treating CrossFit athletes and teaching mobility classes. Yvonne’s passion is fitness - she is a big CrossFit fan because each workout is different from the last so she can never get bored! Yvonne’s mission is to ensure that Sports Massage Therapy gets the professional recognition it deserves.

Synopsis: This Study Event is a chance to hear the clinical reasoning talk Yvonne gave at Therapy Expo, for anyone who couldn't be there on the day. It looks at how to use the subjective assessment to think more clearly about what might be going on, how to prioritise your differential diagnosis, and how to spot when a “routine” MSK presentation might actually need onward referral. The focus is on simple, practical ideas you can use in everyday assessments rather than theory. The presentation itself isn’t long, so there’ll be plenty of time at the end for questions, either about the content of the talk or any general questions you’d like to ask about the SMA.

Chair of the SMA, Yvonne Blake, will open the event at 7pm. We're looking forward to seeing you there!
