Welcome to The SMA

The Sports Massage Association

Why use an SMA therapist?

Full members of the SMA will have undertaken an approved course of education, will have Professional Liability insurance and must adhere to the Association's Code of Conduct.  To ensure members develop and improve their skills as a therapist the Association require all members to complete a minimum of 30 hours CPD (Continuing Professional Development) annually.  Only Full Members of the SMA are entitled to use the SMA logo in their advertising and the letters MSMA after their name. Bona-fide members are issued with a dated membership certificate that confirms their current registration.

Who appears on the register?

Only Full Members who have current insurance details on their profile appear on the register.

A Full member is defined as someone who has completed an eligible Level 4 or 5 qualification and is therefore deemed to be fully qualified under the National Occupational Standards.

Level 3 Therapists, Student members and Friends of the SMA do NOT appear on the register as they have not yet attained the requisite level of qualification.

Note for Full members: if you cannot find yourself on the register, please check on your member profile that your insurance details are current and that you have consented to be publicly visible.

SMA Member Grading

A members grade is based on how long it has been since the date on their qualification certificate, calculated at the time of renewal

Time since qualification  Grade
Less than 1 year  No Grading (Graduate Members only)
1 year - end of third year Bronze
Beginning of 4th year - end of 7th year   Silver
8 years or more   Gold

Please note that this directory is solely for members of the public wishing to locate SMA members for the purpose of seeking soft tissue therapy services.  Any third-party marketing or service companies do not have permission from the SMA to use members' contact details for any marketing purposes.  Third parties wishing to market services to SMA members should contact membership@thesma.org in the first instance
