What the school says:

Cardiff School of Sport offers sports massage and soft tissue practices modules as part of its undergraduate BSc (Hons) degree in Sports Conditioning, Rehabilitation and Massage.  Successful completion of the sports massage modules in year 1 and year 2 of the degree lead to an SMA accredited L4 qualification in Sport Massage and Soft Tissue practices.  This qualification enables practitioners to work independently in designing and delivering sports massage treatments in a variety of training and competitive environments.

The taught modules provide students with a sound understanding of the theoretical aspects of massage, whilst hands-on practice in a safe and supportive learning environment enables students to apply theory to practice.

Close collaboration with Cardiff Met’s sports massage clinic allows students to practice their hand skills and gain valuable real-life experience of working in a supervised sports massage clinic.

Strong links with a number of regional and national charities result in frequent opportunities for students to deliver massage in sporting events.  This enables students to gain experience of designing and delivering massage treatment plans in different environments to clients of various ages and backgrounds.

In the third year of the degree, students can utilise their L4 massage qualification to gain work experience placements to fulfil the requirements of the compulsory work based learning module.  Current and past students have obtained massage-based placements in professional sports teams, with national governing bodies, junior sports teams and clubs, and local massage and physiotherapy clinics.  A number of these placements have led to permanent and full time employment.
