Qualification Requirements

The qualification requirements for SMA membership levels are briefly summarised below

 

Registered Tutor

  • Evidence of teaching on either an SMA Accredited or Endorsed sports massage course. Registration is a no cost option for qualifying tutors.

Level 1

  • Evidenced enrolment on a course at an SMA Accredited School.
  • Evidenced enrolment on a Level 3, 4 or 5 QCF sports massage course provided by VTCT or other awarding body sharing the VTCT-originated qualifications

Level 2

  • Open to practitioners who have attended general massage training or may have a qualification(s) in massage and provide general massage to active individuals.

Level 3

  • Evidence of a Level 3 (QCF) Diploma in Sports Massage.
  • Evidence of an NVQ Diploma in Sports Massage

    Level 4

    • Evidence of a Level 4 or Level 5 BTEC Diploma in Sports Massage obtained at an SMA Accredited School or from a non-accredited SMA school at the discretion of the SMA Board. 
    • Evidence of a Level 4 (QCF) Certificate in Sports Massage obtained at a VTCT registered school or at a school registered with any other awarding body sharing the VTCT originated QCF qualification.
    • Achieving the required standard set by the SMA entrance examination.

    Levels 5 and 6

    We do not have membership levels at 5 and 6 and there are no plans to introduce them. From 1st September 2013 the SMA will be introducing a full membership category only for members currently at Levels 2, 3, 4. Members will then be graded according to their qualification and associated experience. The qualifications that also currently entitle applicants to Level 4 membership are : 
    • Evidence of a Level 5 qualification meeting the requirements stipulated by SMA Core Standards.  
    • Evidence of a Level 5 (QCF) Certificate in Sports Massage obtained at a VTCT registered school or at a school registered with any other awarding body sharing the VTCT originated QCF qualification.
    • Demonstration of competence at Level 5 gained from experience (the Experiential route)
    • Evidence of a Level 6 BTEC Diploma in Sports Massage obtained at an SMA Accredited School or from a non-accredited SMA school at the discretion of the SMA Board.
